Interview Transcriber

Turns a recorded interview into a written transcript, with each speaker labelled and every line timed so you can click a sentence and hear it.

Everything happens inside this browser, on this computer. Your recordings are never uploaded anywhere except to ElevenLabs, who do the transcribing.

Setting up — you only ever do this once

  1. Create an ElevenLabs account. Go to elevenlabs.io and sign up. Transcribing uses credits, so you will need a paid plan. Their pricing page shows how many hours of audio each plan covers.
  2. Open the API keys page. Once you are signed in, go to elevenlabs.io/app/settings/api-keys. An “API key” is simply a long password that lets this page talk to your ElevenLabs account on your behalf.
  3. Create a new key. Click the button to add one and give it a name you will recognise, such as Transcriber.
  4. Restrict it to Speech to Text. On the same form, ElevenLabs lets you choose which parts of your account the key is allowed to touch. Switch everything off except Speech to Text. This matters: it means that even if the key were ever seen by somebody else, all they could do is transcribe audio.
  5. Set a credit limit. The same form lets you cap how many credits this key may spend. Set it to something sensible for a month of interviews. That cap is your safety net.
  6. Copy the key and paste it below. ElevenLabs shows the key only once, so copy it before you close the window.

The key is stored on this computer only, in this browser. It is never sent to anyone but ElevenLabs.

Leave this empty and everything else still works. If you add an Anthropic key, a Summarise button appears on each transcript that pulls out the main points, the achievements mentioned and the strongest quotes — taking them only from what was actually said, never inventing anything. It is billed separately by Anthropic.

Recover a transcription

If a transcription was interrupted — the laptop slept, the internet dropped — ElevenLabs may still have finished it. This fetches the recent ones from your account so you do not pay twice.

Clear everything

Deletes every saved transcript and recording from this browser. It cannot be undone.
